Works 01:The Glory of Christ
The excellent biography by Andrew Thomson which is included in this first
volume of John Owen's works, sympathetically traces his life and experience
from his birth in Stadhampton, through his pastoral ministries in Fordham and
Coggeshall, his years of public service as chaplain to Cromwell and
vice-chancellor of Oxford University, until his last days as a preacher and
pastor in London.
Included in this volume is his work on The Person of Christ, which
together with its continuation, the Meditations on the Glory of
Christ, deems our highest honor next to Calvin's Institutes, as Dr. McCrie
has said. This volume concludes with two examples of Owen's intense pastoral
concern, in the form of Two Short Catechisms, designed to help and
instruct the members of his congregation at Fordham. According to Owen himself,
they represent the substance of the teaching he gave in his regular preaching
ministry.
